April 8, 2009; His Airness takes his place in the Hall
MJ, His Airness, Air Jordan. Whatever you want to call him, he is regarded as the greatest player who ever played the game. And now, at 46 years of age, Michael Jeffrey Jordan will finally be inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame on September 13th.
Jordan attended the University of North Carolina for 3 years, where he won a National Championship in 1982. He was the 3rd overall draft pick for the Chicago Bulls in the 1984 draft. He won the Rookie of the Year award for his rookie year. He was a 14-time All-Star, a 5-time NBA MVP, a 6-time Finals MVP, won multiple All-NBA First Team honors (10 times), a 3-times NBA All-Star MVP, led the league in scoring for 10 different seasons, a 9-time member of the NBA All-Defensive Team, a one-time Defensive Player of the Year, 2-time NBA Slam Dunk Champion, a 6-time NBA Champion, and a 2-time Olympic gold medalist when he suited up for the USA National Team as a collegian in 1984 Los Angeles Games and a member of the Original Dream at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.
During his 16-year NBA career, he averaged 30.12 points, the highest for any player in the league. He also finished 3rd in the all-time scoring list, with 32,292 points, only behind Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Karl Malone. He also tallied 6,672 rebounds, 5,633 assists, 2,514 steals and 893 blocks.
Just a trivia for all you MJ fans. We all know that MJ wore 3 different jersey numbers in his entire career. The famous number 23, which was retired by the Tar Heels, Bulls and Wizards, the number 45, and his Olympic jersey number 9. But did you know that he wore the number 12? Yes,he indeed wore that on one particular game during the year 1990 against the Orlando Magic. The reason behind this is that somebody stole his number 23 jersey prior to that game.
He will forever be remembered for his patented shots, his free-throw line dunk during the 1986 Slam Dunk Contest and for bringing the sport of basketball into a whole different arena. He brought a new game into the league, making him the greatest who ever played. There will not be another Michael Jordan, there's only one. And now, he will be enshrined into the infamous Hall to solidify a magnificent career.
Together with Jordan in the Class of 2009 is former Spurs center David Robinson, former Utah Jazz point guard John Stockton, Utah Jazz head coach Jerry Sloan, and Rutgers women's head coach C. Vivian Stringer.
