April 20, 2009; The dream of a Quintiple is all gone...
The picture above shows United defender Rio Ferdinand on his spot-kick attempt, which was saved by Everton's goalie Tim Howard.
Yes, Manchester United was defeated by Everton last night, 4-2, via penalties, in front of 88,141 fans inside the Wembley Stadium, thus ending all the hopes of an unprecidented Quintiple.
Manchester United were a young team last night, due to the absence of Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney, Michael Carrick, Ryan Giggs, and goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar. The team started with these players:
Goalkeeper: Ben Foster
Defenders: Rafael Di Santo, Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, Fabio Di Santo
Midfielders: Danny Welbeck, Anderson, Darron Gibson, Ji-Sung Park
Strikers: Federico Macheda, Carlos Tevez
The subs were Tomas Kuszczak, Gary Neville, Dimitar Berbatov, Nani, Paul Scholes, Jonny Evans and Patrice Evra.
The game wasn't decided after 90 minutes of regular playing time and the 30 minute extra time. Therefore, penalties were needed to determine the winner of the semi-final. Everton drew first to kick. Tim Cahill missed badly for the Toffees. Berbatov was first for United, but he also missed after a soft hit which was easily picked by Howard. Next for Everton is Leighton Baines, who made it 1-0. Next for United is Rio Ferdinand, who had his shot blocked once more by Tim Howard. It was Phil Neville who made it 2-0 for Everton, while Nemanja Vidic eased it to 2-1. James Vaughan made it 3-1, while Anderson kept United alive, making the score 3-2.
But, it was Phil Jagielka, the same person who tackled Danny Welbeck in the second half which should have given United a spot-kick, who delivered the final salvo for the Toffees, 4-2, sending their team to the FA Cup Final against Chelsea at Wembley Stadium on May 30th.
