September 26, 2008; Ateneo swept La Salle, wins championship!
Ateneo De Manila Blue Eagles defeated the De La Salle Green Archers yesterday, 62-51, to win the men's basketball tournament for Season 71 of the UAAP infrornt of a record-settin crowd of 22,955 inside the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City. This season's MVP Rabeh Al-Hussaini and teammate Chris Tiu led trhe Katipunan-based squad over the Taft-based squad. La Salle's head coach Franz Pumaren said on an interview that yesterday was the worst officiated game that he experienced in his entire illustrious career as a coach, as two of his players, JVee Casio and Rico Maierhofer went out of the game because of reasons he felt were unreal. Casipo fouled out during the halfway point of the 4th period, while Rico Maierhofer was thrown out of the playing court because of a "dirty finger". Ateneo last won the crown six years ago, also defeating La Salle, while La Salle, failed to win the crown in two straight years because they were the champions last season. And now here arethe Mythical Five for this season!C ADMU Rabeh Al-HussainiF UST Jervy CruzF DLSU Rico MaierhoferG DLSU JVee CasioG ADMU Chris TiuUAAP Season 71Game 2 FinalsDLSU 51ADMU 62DLSU: JVee Casio- 18 pts, 5 rebs, 2 assts, 1 stl.ADMU: Chris Tiu- 16 pts, 5 rebs, 3 assts, 1 stl.ADMU: Wins the series and the championship, first time in six years.DLSU: Failed to win back-to-back championships. So there, the men's basketball tournament for Season 71 is over. September 21, 2008; Ateneo draws first blood; gains twice-to-beat!
The Ateneo Blue Eagles showed the De La Salle Green Archers why they were the number one team this season by winning the first game of their best-of-three Finals series, 69-61, infront of 22,900 fans inside the Big Dome, the Araneta Coliseum. The Blue Eagles were led by MVP candidate "The Great Rabeh-lation" Rabeh Al-Hussaini with 31 big points along with 9 rebounds, while Jai Reyes and rookie Ryan Buenafe chipped in 12 points each for the Loyola-based squad. Nonoy Baclao made the crucial stop of the game when he blocked the shot attempt of Rico Maierhofer, forcing a turnover, and eventually the win for the Ateneo. Captain Chris Tiu, was limited to only two points, his lowest output this season. The Archers on the other hand, were anchored by captain JVee Casio with 20 points and 8 rebounds, while big man Rico Maierhofer had a double-double performance with 17 points and 16 rebounds, on a losing effort. No other Archer scored more than 10 points besides the two.The second game of the Finals series will commence on Thursday, still at the mecca of sports-entertainment, the Araneta Coliseum. But before the game starts, the annual Awarding Ceremonies will push through. September 14, 2008; It's them again...
Just like in the NBA, wherein the rivalry between the Celtics and the Lakers were renewed during the Finals, the rivalry between Katipunan-based Ateneo De Manila University and the Taft-based De La Salle University will be renewed come Thursday as their best-of-three championship starts.De La Salle entered the finals by beating the FEU Tamaraws just hours ago via a 67-62 score. James Mangahas led the way for the Archers with 20 points and 8 rebounds. The Archers are the defending champions for this season.Ateneo on the other hand, entered the finals by defeating the UE Red Warriors, 70-50, a while ago at the Araneta Coliseum. The two squad will start their duel Thursday afternoon, still at the Big Dome at 4:00 PM. Both Ateneo and De La Salle held a twice-to-beat advantage against their opponents because they finished as the top two teams after two rounds of elimination. And in boxing action, Vernon "The Viper" Forrest defeated Sergio Mora to regain the WBC 154-lb World Championship at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. While Juan Manuel "Dinamita" Marquez defeated Joel "El Sepillo" Casamayor for the RIng Magazine Lightweight Championship of the World. And for football news, Manchester United lost last night Manila time against rival LIverpool 2-1 at Anfield, the homefield of Liverpool. The only goal of United was scored just 3 minutes in the game by Carlos Tevez, from Dimitri Berbatov's perfect pass. Then, Liverpool scored by an own goal by Wes Brown, which tied the game at 1-1. Then Liverpool's Babel sealed the win for the Reds with a late goal, much to the dismay of Sir Alex Ferguson. The Reds now lead the Premier League standings with 10 points, 3 points clear of Chelsea. Manchester United is now tied for 13th place with just 4 points. So there. Too much sports! Haha! Hope you had a great Sunday! God bless you guys! Stay safe! Peace out! After a Saturday class which spanned from 12 noon to 5 in the afternoon, me and my friends went to Shakey's Espana to celebrate our friend/classmate, Aris' 19th birthday. But due to the early dismissal, thanks to our Health Economics professor, we had a chance to watch the Ateneo/La Salle game, at the lobby of the Main Building. Since there was no volume, I was the one who did the commenting. Haha! Play by play! Haha! So there! :) I just wanna entertain my friends. They even commended me for a good job, which was like flattering in a way. Halftime came, and we all went to Shakey's together as one class.
